Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy birdied six holes on the back nine to finish with a 9-under 63 in the first round of the British Open on Thursday. Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland tied the major championship record by shooting a 9-under 63 in the opening round of the British Open. John Daly was three shots back and Tiger Woods trailed by four on the Old Course at St. Andrews.
